If you’re a guest at the Summit Inn Bed and Breakfast anytime between July 12th-16th we have a special treat for you! Lindstrom, the largest city of the Chisago Lakes community, is having their city festival. Karl Oskar Days has been a tradition for 55 years. Each year as unique as the last, it is a phenomenal chance to experience the warmth of our bedroom community. Celebrating again our Swedish heritage and the 4 book series “The Emigrants” inspired by our scenic and Scandinavian-like landscape when Vilhelm Moberg visited in 1948.
Karl Oskar is a fictional character but Lindstrom has made him and his wife Kristina real. Starting Wednesday July 12th, our annual Snuff Box hunt begins. Yes, I said Snuff Box. Personally I have never found it so I have no clue what it looks like but it could possibly be an empty box that once held snuff hidden within the Lindstrom City limits. When I was a kid, it was said it was golden and that’s how you know you have the right one. Haha! Who knows?!?! Each day a new clue is posted at 4 local businesses until the box is found. Here is a link to more details: Snuff Box Hunt.
In addition to the Snuff Box hunt there are a lot of other fabulous events and activities planned by our Chamber of Commerce and City of Lindstrom. I won’t try to mention everything but I assure you from Cribbage Tournaments to Auto Shows, Craft Fairs to an inflatable park, there will be something for you to not only participate in but thoroughly enjoy!!! Did I mention the parade and fireworks?!?! The full schedule is here: Karl Oskar Days 2017. They also have a very informative Facebook Page.
If you’re not from around the area and need help with where downtown, the Lion’s Park, the Beach Park or other celebration locations are, feel free to ask any of the Innkeepers at Summit Inn Bed and Breakfast. We will be happy to point you in the right direction!
One of our “claims to fame” aside from the water tower that looks like a teapot, is that we are a predominately swedish community. So much so that our area cities have “sister cities” in Sweden. Starting from West to East along highway 8, they are Chisago City = Algutsboda, Lindstrom = Tingsryd, Center City (where Summit Inn Bed and Breakfast is located) = Hassela, and finally Shafer = Nobbele. There is a fascinating story about how we became sister-cities. If you’re interested, here’s a link to an article titled “U.S. Highway 8 Swedish Sister City Signs and How They Came to Be”. If you happen to be Swedish and want to explore some of the Minnesota history with Sweden, Explore Minnesota website has a fabulous 3 day itinerary you’d LOVE!
With all that being said, the summer solstice is quickly approaching and our community has several opportunities to celebrate if you wish to join in! Midsummer has pagan roots dating back before Christianity. Rumor is that the Roman Catholic Church wanted to try and incorporate Pagan Holiday’s they declared June 24th as St.John’s Day which was acknowledging the birthday of John the Baptist. It was also declared that the celebration should be held on a Friday night so the date of Midsummer varies from year to year but is always between June 19-25. A great article In today’s society, it is still considered to be one of the most important holiday’s to Scandinavian countries and Wiccan Covens. To this day, people pilgrimage to Stonehenge to celebrate the holiday.
There are 2 places within 15 miles of Summit Inn Bed and Breakfast that are providing a glimpse into this unfamiliar yet exciting holiday. One is is Lindstrom at the Karl Oskar House. On Friday, June 23rd at 3pm, begins an evening of fun with the building and decorating of the May Pole. At 5pm there will be a pot luck and entertainment after that. If you are in town and want more information, please feel free to call Shirley at 651-257-5855.
The second place that is going to be celebrating Midsummer is the Gammelgarden Immigrant Heritage Museum in Scandia. They will take the day on Saturday, June 24 to pay tribute to St. John and the Summer Solstice. Here is a copy of the schedule from their Facebook Page.
“In Sweden, Midsommar Dag is the most important holiday of the year and one of the most uniquely Swedish in the way it is celebrated. The Majstång (the Swedish version of a Maypole) is decorated with greens and flowers then raised in the center of town. Traditional Swedish music and dances celebrate the long days of summer!

• 10-4pm: Craft & Art Fair, Swedish Genealogy Society of MN
• 10-1 St. Paul Kubb Club Society demonstration

As you can see, there is a lot to see and do this weekend while you’re at the Summit Inn Bed and Breakfast! Come on in, enjoy our Swedish roots and find yourself at your home-away-from-home!
We often get asked what there is to do around here. The answer is complex as there is A LOT to do depending on what your interests are. However so much of it depends on what week or weekend you’re staying at Summit Inn Bed and Breakfast. The good news is that there are several awesome things that happen every week during the summer months.
On Wednesday’s at the Lion’s Park in Lindstrom we have “Harmony in the Park“. Every week is uniquely different and it’s hard to describe. There is a “pre-game” activity or activities ranging from an Antique Car Show to a local clogging group that starts at 6:30 pm. At 7pm is when the music starts at the outdoor Amphitheatre located right there in the park. Again each week is different but ranges from American Folk to a really good Elvis impersonator. Did I mention he’s really good?!?! Ha! The point is, Wednesday nights are a fabulous opportunity to get in touch with your grass roots and join the locals at a great venue. Just plan to bring bug spray and a blanket or lawn chair. We are in Minnesota after all… Here is a link to the schedule: Harmony in the Park 2017
St. Croix Falls has our next weekly event on Friday nights at The Overlook. Its a deck built into the cliffs that has the mighty St.Croix River as it’s backdrop. The drive there on Highway 8 is just about as scenic as it winds around the bluffs. Rock formations on your left, a bird’s-eye view of the river valley to your left, it’s worth just driving there for that. But if it’s Friday night, it’s worth heading into St. Croix Falls and catching a show. Here’s a link to their Facebook Page! Also note that if there is rain, you will still get to enjoy the show just indoors at The Dalles House.
I’ve mentioned before our local farmer’s markets but it’s worth bringing them up again. What makes these markets so great is that they are more like a bazaar than just a farmers market. With things like fresh cut flowers, nursery plants, homemade jams and breads as well as items made by local crafters, these Farmers Markets are the place to go! Lindstrom has theirs on Wednesday Evenings from 3pm-6pm and Saturday Mornings 8am-12pm at St. Bridgets Catholic Church Parking lot. Chisago City has theirs on Friday nights from 2pm-6:30pm at Moberg Park. Check out their schedule as they also host local musicians and artists for more community fun!
Can you believe these are just the weekly events?!?! Watch for upcoming blogs about the “usual” things to do based on interest. Can’t wait!
